Honorary Award Presented to Professor Winifred Kaine in Recognition of her Meritorious and Long Service to Patients and Families with Sickle Cell Anemia in Enugu

Professor Winifred Nwazulumasu Kaine was born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria into the family of Late Justice and Mrs Hyacinth Kaine. She is a native of Ndam Village of Osomari in Ogbaru Local Government area of Anambra State. She attended the prestigious Holy Child College, Ikoyi, Lagos, for her secondary education as a pioneer student and studied for her ā€˜Aā€™ levels at Blackpool, England.

Thereafter. Winnie as she is fondly called by her peers and contemporaries among whom was Prof Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, proceeded to the University of London for her undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. She obtained the following degrees ā€“ LRCP, MRCS (England), MBBS (London), Diploma in Child Health (England), FRCP London, FRCP Edinburgh, FICP, FMCPaed, and FWACP. She was one of the Foundation staff of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

An astute Administrator, She was Head Department of Paediatrics of the University of Nigeria 1970- 1976, 1982-1986, and 1995-1997. Dr Kaine has pride of place as the Founder and pioneer Director of the Institute of Child Health, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, 1987-1998, Associate Dean (clinical) August 1988- 1990 and Dean August 1992- July 1994 Faculty of Medical Sciences and Dentistry UNN. She was also Chairman, Faculty of Paediatrics, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria 1990-1996. She is a member of many professional bodies including the Royal Society of Medicine Great Britain, NMA, PAN and a past National President of MWAN.

In the course of her medical career that has spanned more than 50 yrs Prof WN Kaine has taught and mentored many doctors who have become great teachers and clinicians themselves. She also started the designated sickle cell clinic at the UNTH bringing succor to thousands of children with sickle cell and published many articles on the subject in local and international journals.
