Come and join us as we come together to learn, train and celebrate our efforts to eradicate Sickle Cell Disease.

Plans & Goals

The 2015 World Sickle Cell Celebrations is scheduled to take place from 17th – 19th June 2015, at the Auditorium, National Trauma Centre, National Hospital, Abuja, Nigeria. This event is being planned by the Sickle Cell Support Society of Nigeria in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria.

The Sickle Cell Support Society of Nigeria (SCSSN) is an umbrella body that brings together Nigerian doctors, scientists, NGOs and patients with interest in sickle cell disease (SCD), both within the country and in Diaspora.  The Society has made progress in advocacy for the control of (SCD), building collaborations for scientific research and establishing guidelines for uniform management of patients with the disease at primary secondary and tertiary health care levels. This has been done by working closely with the government, professional groups both within the country and in Diaspora.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Control of Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria at Primary Care Level’ with sub theme “Collaboration for the Control of Sickle Cell Disease in West Africa”. Our goal is to explore ways of expanding sickle cell care into primary health care settings where majority of Nigerians live by leveraging on and using existing infrastructure and programs that have worked at that level.

Of interest in this year’s celebration is a workshop intended to forge links between Nigeria and UK researchers. This is being planned with the British High Commission in Nigeria. We also plan to launch the West African Sickle Cell Network.

We expect to have in attendance about 150 participants from all over the country who are members of the Society actively involved in the management of sickle cell disease patients, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technologists, health care workers at primary health care centres, scientists, researchers, patients with SCD, care givers, laboratory supply and equipment vendors, pharmaceutical companies as well as high level policy makers.

The meeting will be highly publicized, with live streaming  as we also intend to have training for the media at this meeting.  This will be a great opportunity for anyone wishing to make an entry into the Nigerian market for any product.
